Hebrides Ensemble

We are extremely fortunate to be able to welcome the Hebrides Ensemble to the Stogumber Festival this year. They will be playing pieces for Cello, Clarinet and Piano by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch and Leighton in what promises to be a beautiful and popular programme.
Hebrides Ensemble, based in Scotland, is a collective of world-class musicians from the UK and Europe, renowned for its quality of performance and diversity of repertoire. Co-founded and led by its artistic director, the cellist and conductor William Conway, the Ensemble have given notable performances of many major twentieth century pieces, and are frequently to be heard on BBC Radio 3. At the 2015 Stogumber Festival they will be represented by William Conway, Philip Moore and Yann Ghiro.
William Conway – Artistic Director and Cello
William Conway studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, the Royal College of Music and with Ralph Kirshbaum. He was principal cello of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) and throughout his career William has held the post of principal cello with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe working with many great conductors including Karajan, Guilini, Maazel, Haitink, Harnoncourt and Abbado. William’s strong commitment to contemporary music. was recognised by an award from the Scottish Society of Composers for “an outstanding contribution to new music”. He works regularly with young musicians including National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra.
Philip Moore - Piano
Philip Moore studied at London’s Royal Academy of Music with Hamish Milne and was appointed an ARM Associate in 2003. In 2004 he became a Steinway Artist. Philip has performed in the USA, Canada, Korea, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, Tunisia, and at the major UK venues. He has appeared as a concerto artist with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Philharmonia Orchestra, the Hallé, Britten Sinfonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Philip’s piano duo with Simon Crawford-Phillips has performed and broadcast internationally, including world premieres at the BBC Proms, the Southbank, Carnegie Hall NY, Kölner Philharmonie and Cité de la musique Paris. Philip has recorded for Linn, Naxos, Signum and Deux-Elles.
Yann Ghiro - Clarinet
Yann Ghiro studied at the Paris Conservatoire, and Prague Mozart Academy. A Fulbright Scholarship then allowed him to study at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, graduating in 1996. He subsquently became principal bass clarinet in the Pasdeloup Orchestra in Paris, also appearing regularly with Paris Opera, Orchestre de Paris, Ensemble Intercontemporain,Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 1998 Yann has been principal clarinet in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra with which he performs and records as a soloist. He is regularly guest principal with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, Northern Symphonia, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
